Dental Implants

Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. They are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support a replacement. Dental implants provide a stable foundation for the replacement teeth, allowing them to function and look like natural teeth.

Here are some key points about dental implants:

  1. Procedure: The dental implant procedure typically involves multiple steps. First, a dental implant, usually made of titanium, is surgically placed into the jawbone. This implant fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration, which usually takes a few months. After the implant has integrated, an abutment is placed on top of it to connect the implant to the replacement tooth. Finally, a dental crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutment, providing a natural-looking and functional tooth restoration.

  2. Benefits: Dental implants offer several advantages over other tooth replacement options, such as dentures or bridges. They provide a more permanent and stable solution since they are anchored in the jawbone. This stability allows for better chewing and speaking abilities compared to removable dentures. Dental implants also help preserve the jawbone and prevent bone loss, which can occur when a tooth is missing. Additionally, implants look and feel like natural teeth, improving your overall appearance and self-confidence.

  3. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for dental implants. Sufficient jawbone density and volume are required to support the implant. If there is not enough bone, bone grafting may be necessary to build up the area before implant placement. Good oral health is also crucial, as conditions like gum disease can affect the success of the implant. Each case is unique, we have two implantologists at Hermitage Dental Practice (Dumitru and Ian) who are able to provide consultations to assess suitability for the procedure.

  4. Care and Maintenance: Dental implants require regular oral hygiene practices, similar to natural teeth. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing, and routine dental check-ups and hygiene treatments. It's also important to avoid habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as they can negatively impact the longevity and success of the implant.

  5. Success Rate: Dental implants have a high success rate, typically ranging from 95% to 98%. Properly cared for implants can last a lifetime, making them the best long-term solution for tooth replacement.
